"Have you talked to Elena?" Sarah finally asked.
"She's been in meetings all week. Layoff planning. They're calling it 'workforce optimization.'" Marcus's voice carried a bitter edge. "The irony is, she's probably the safest of all of us. Someone has to deliver the bad news."
Sarah's coffee had gone cold. She pushed it aside. "What am I supposed to do, Marcus? I've been a writer my entire career. It's not just what I do—it's who I am."
"I don't know," he admitted. "But I know you're not the only one asking that question. And maybe... maybe that's where we start. Not with answers, but with the right questions."
"She's been studying this transition," Marcus said. "The human cost. She might have insights. Or at least, understanding."
Sarah looked at the paper, then at Marcus. In his eyes, she saw the same fear she felt—the fear of becoming obsolete, of watching your life's work become a museum piece.
